Consistency – The most important ingredient of your Yoga practice

COVID has got us all hooked on Yoga and wellness because it has made us aware of how important lifestyle is. It has taught us the true meaning and value of health – which cannot be traded or bought against materialistic goods.

A lot of people also figured that they are better off with Yoga as it does not put the body in a state that requires the body to recover, rather a Yoga session in itself can be a good recovery for the body.

Of late, a lot of people get into the practice rather passionately, but sometimes, Yoga slows you down and grounds you so much, that people think it’s a boring practice. They do not see it as similar to brushing or bathing like we do every day. More often, Yoga has come to be viewed as a hobby, but ancient scriptures always called it Yoga sadhana i.e. integration and imbibing of the practice into your life.

The ones who can sustain the practice for an extended time are the ones who can reap the benefits of the practice beautifully.

Sometimes, there is also a lack of a good peer group for the inculcation of good habits. Yoga mornings are viewed as something that is a strict discipline but Friday night beers are viewed as something normal and required to relax. That's why it’s not only important to adhere to a morning routine as if you were being paid for it and have a peer group that will inspire you to stay put without abandoning what you started. It’s also important to have a good Guru or teacher who can keep you progressing and grounded deep into the practice.

Like any other activity, it’s a habit that needs to be developed. Unfortunately, if you keep going on and off the practice, you are reinforcing the neural pathway in the brain which normalizes the irregularity. So it’s better to go in fully, sincerely, and dedicatedly. And stay consistent.
