Reflection of 2023

I have been able to do a little bit of the many things I have wanted. There were some of the things I have desired to do/ learn for more than a decade. I realized that the most important ingredient in being able to do these things is – Discipline.

Discipline begins with small things – taking up a random chore – be it doing the dishes and making sure you do that one job everyday, sincerely, without cribbing.

We have a very bad relationship with the word discipline because it’s ingrained in us that it means obeying the superior no matter what. The discomfort often comes from the intergenerational trauma of obeying the superior party/ rulers – we are the 2nd and 3rd generation who have had the opportunity to live in a free country.

The Classical Text of Patanjali Yoga Sutra 1.1 begins with Atha Yoganushasanam which loosely means NOW is an auspicious time to begin the discipline of Yoga. Your practice is nothing without discipline.

Integrity, consistency, dedication, perseverance, persistence, habit, ethics, satsang and devotion can all be built on discipline.

People who are used to chalta hai attitude, indiscipline and backtracking on their words will feel that your discipline is arrogance. Conversely, people who are amazing at their professions – they are disciplined, they respect and revere people’s time. They also take their hobbies seriously.

My Yoga Teacher is always in 40 + minutes before the start of the class, never eats before the class, takes attendance, remembers case history in detail, of what I know(hearing him speak in class), he knows six languages minimum and very many texts…he is a strict disciplinarian. It’s difficult to match up to him, but in 2024, I shall try.
