Spirituality gives a lot of emphasis to sound energy. Spiritual texts mention mantra. Mantras are chanted to deepen the connection with the self and to progress on the spiritual path.
Mantras are not ordinary words, they are a combination of powerful sound vibrations which help the yogi uplift and heal their mental and emotional energies. They have the ability to energize the yogi as they vibrate with positive frequencies. They influence prana shakti which makes one feel at peace.
We all commonly know how music affects our moods. Music has a vibration which can emotionally trigger us in a positive or negative manner. Similarly, there are no honking zones around schools and hospitals because unnecessary sounds create noise pollution. This is a cause of stress, high blood pressure and sleep deprivation. This also hampers a person’s productivity.
Mantra is a point of focus to overpower and combat unnecessary thoughts and sounds. It stabilises the mental fluctuations of the mind and also strengthens the will power of the yogi. It puts a speed-breaker to the flow of uncontrollable thoughts. This leads to arresting the mind (Mananat-trayate iti Mantrah). The inherent rhythm of the mantra helps to stabilise our speech and our breath. It also helps us breathe fuller, and releases positive chemicals in the brain to combat cortisol.
Mantra chants produce a rhythmic heartbeat which stabilises blood pressure. It makes the aura which is electromagnetic energy emanating from a person, strong and positive. When a mantra is repeated it creates a powerful psychic force around the yogi, similar to a pebble being thrown into a lake, creating concentric ripples. Once the inner self is stabilised, can one have a powerful influence on the external environment.
Traditionally, only a Guru can initiate a disciple into a mantra. A Guru gives a part of their own energy and frequency to their disciple by teaching them practices like mantra chanting. A lot of emphasis is placed on the intonation, rhythm and meter of the mantra. As per Yogic texts, there are four stages to mantra chanting – chanting it loud, whisper, mental chant and the fourth stage where the mantra gets fully fused into your being and consciousness. In the fourth stage the body gets vibrationally fused with the mantra. The stages go from gross to subtle, similar to the Ashtanga marga of patanjali where first the body is trained then the breath, the senses and then the mind.
Listening to bhajans and meditating on mantras also help in clearing stagnant emotional energy. The mantra heals the emotional body by cleaning it of the impurities. Put simply, mantra is a way to access the higher spiritual frequency which we are unaware of otherwise.
The same way in which you tune your radio to stop at your favorite channel, you can do mantra yoga to tune into the frequency of the universe. Various studies now prove that Mantra Yoga can heal the body and the mind. Some of the universal mantras which can be chanted without initiation are Om, Gayatri Durga and Mahamrityunjaya mantra.
