I see a lot of misinformation being spread about what Yoga is. This time a video by a couple who say – “I think Yoga is moderation” and another who says “I feel Yoga is about having fun”.
I shudder to think about how corrupt the subject of Yoga would become if every individual keeps adding new definitions as per what they personally think and feel.
However there have been books written by Yoga masters which become a compass to all our questions.
Text Patanjali Yoga Sutra
Yogas Chitta Vritti Nirodha
This means the cessation in the fluctuations of the mind and stoppage of thinking of both negative and positive thoughts.
Text Bhagwad Gita
buddhi-yukto jahātīha ubhe sukṛita-duṣhkṛite tasmād yogāya yujyasva yogaḥ karmasu kauśhalam
One who prudently practices the science of work without attachment can get rid of both good and bad reactions in this life itself. Therefore, strive for Yog, which is the art of working skillfully (in proper consciousness) without desire called Nishkama karma.
yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā dhanañjaya siddhy-asiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṁ yoga uchyate
Be steadfast in the performance of your duty, O Arjun, abandoning attachment to success and failure. Such equanimity is called Yog.
Yoga is a balanced state of the body, mind, emotions, thoughts and intellect. Yoga is a balanced state of behavior. We are excited in the situation of pleasure and we become sad when it is a painful one. Yoga is to maintain the equilibrium of the mind in any situation. This equanimity of mind is the ultimate objective of yoga.
Text Vedanta
Yoga is the union of individual soul with universal soul.
