Yagya and Environment

Yagya is a Vedic rite performed for spiritual purposes in front of a sacred fire. The process involves rituals such as prayers and mantras. Yagya has a special significance in marriages, spiritual initiations, and birth ceremonies. During the performance of Yagya, various items are offered as samagri(offering to sacred fire) which include dry fruits, ghee, sweets, rice, grains, mango wood, sandalwood, camphor, etc.

Today, pollution in the environment is at an all-time high. This is increasing with excess population, deforestation, and overconsumption. One of the major issues affecting us currently, especially in metro cities is – air pollution. Reclaiming forest land which is a natural air purifier is the major reason. As per WHO, this has caused various kinds of diseases which range from cough and cold to severe lung and heart issues. In 2019, it was reported that the majority of deaths were caused by high particulate matter which causes obstruction in airways and leads to damage to the lungs. Our ancient texts like Rigveda and Yajurveda recommend Yagya to purify the home and environment. Most living beings are dependent on fresh air for prana i.e. life. Yagya works as an air purifier and reduces Particulate Matter in the air and decreases its overall toxins. It is therefore reducing the number and intensity of damage to the lungs and heart. Even if the damage is done, Yagya helps slow the process of deterioration.

When we pollute the air, the resultant precipitation that falls on soils and water bodies results in pollution of soil and water too. Excessive industrial activity and improper disposal of waste cause soil pollution. This has made the soil acidic, and toxic and caused an increase in autoimmune disorders in humans and infertility in soil. Water pollution is caused due to sewage and improper disposal of industrial waste.

The ash from Yagya when mixed in soil balances the pH of the soil and makes the soil more alkaline. This is used to improve the fertility and nourishment of soil and is called Homa farming. The ash counters the effects of toxins in the soil and makes it healthy for vegetation. The energy field of Yagya also helps to purify water and this has been tested by Dr. Ulrich Berk from Germany. So Yagya helps to improve the flora and fauna of both the water and soil. Yagya Therapy is very popular and is widely used all over the world.

Humans and animals are an important part of the environment. When Yagya happens, it increases the overall vibration of the place. It has grounding aspects, so it calms down a person and improves the emotional and mental health of the individual. A person who is vibrating in a low state of mind is pulled into higher consciousness. Instead of inhaling the particulate matter, the people are inhaling fumes of herbs and good quality wood, so it enhances the immune system, respiratory system, and nervous system.

Atharvaveda, Rigveda, and Charaka Samhita mention the benefits of Yagya for various disorders like TB, Worm infections, fever, goiter, mania, and pregnancy. A few examples are Atharvaveda 19/58/1 – Which describes Yagya to get longevity and vitality through the burning of herbs with ghee for a long duration. Rigveda 10/162/1-2 Describes Yagya to make embryos free from any foreign organisms and worms.

Yagya is a time when people come together. It increases the spiritual bonding between people who are present for the ceremony. The process involves strengthening Sankalpa and spiritual goals. So there are not one, but innumerable benefits of herbs with ghee for a long duration. Rigveda 10/162/1-2 Describes Yagya to make embryos free from any foreign organisms and worms.
