Some of us begin our Yoga/ spiritual practice but are not able to sustain it. Starting it seems like turning a new leaf. It is exciting in the beginning but continuing it becomes boring. Can we consider our yoga practice as something to be done as regularly as brushing, bathing, eating, and sleeping? How can we avoid some of the obstacles that will arise when it comes to sustaining our practice?
Getting bored We are accustomed to overusing our minds and our senses. Because of this, we find it difficult to sustain our Yoga practice. Our minds are habituated to having a variety of inputs from the senses. Constantly switching from one thing to the next has become our second nature, so, when we try to develop a focus for our practice, the mind screams ‘boring, boring, boring!’ Solution: You can try changing the sequence of your practice and add the fun bits or your favourite parts in the beginning so that you will be excited to start your practice and eventually stay through.
Not having enough time If you do not practice the first thing in the morning, it is easy to tell yourself that you will do it later and then realize that you do not have the time to do it. Solution: Try to wake up earlier than usual and do your practice first thing in the morning, even before checking your phone.
Forgetting to practice It is easy to forget to practice if you do not do it in the morning. Solution: Set 2 daily reminders, one for pre-practice – something like ‘practice Yoga after an hour’ and another for the actual practice – something like ‘practice Yoga now‘.
Knowing that Yoga is good for you, but still not being able to practice due to distractions Solution: Get rid of the distractions. Maintain a journal and before sleeping, write down how the practice will benefit you and why you must stick to it. The habit of writing these things down will help you develop your willpower.
